The Games Industry Is Driven By Marketing Stories

speakers-corner-20Discoverability, collapsing social game models, failing gamification and weak levels of excitement for new gaming platforms have all conspired to make 2012 a complicated year for games. For some this means that the business is all about selling shovels rather than prospecting for gold, but maybe it's more about identifying the causes that players believe in.

An Unpublished Writer's Wall of Fame ? Marmaduke Writing Factory

When I was a teenager, back in the 1970s, I had a big poster of the Marx Brothers above my bed (the brothers? eyes would follow you around the room, which was creepy enough that late one night I tore the poster down); quotes from favorite movies (Casablanca, M, The Maltese Falcon, more Marx Brothers) around my bookshelf; and curling old 8x10s of the New York Mets near the door.

Oh, and a wall full of rejection slips over my desk.

I was about eight when I decided I wanted to be a writer, and maybe fourteen when I took that desire public, so to speak, by submitting my work to magazines, newspapers, and even more far-flung destinations. My benchmark, my guide, my Bible: Writer?s Market, a huge tome that listed every possible outlet for my prose. There came a time when I knew the name of the articles editors of everything from The New Yorker to the Old Farmer?s Almanac.

As the results dribbled in?self-addressed stamped envelopes dropping through our mail slot?out would come the Scotch tape and up would go the rejection slip. A form letter, every time, always using roughly the same words: We are sorry to inform you?. Does not suit our present needs?. Best of luck in the future?.?One magazine, possibly? The Atlantic,?said, Please excuse this impersonal form of reply, which I thought sounded especially?personal.

Why was I so proud of my rejection slips? Why I would show them off, instead of burying them in a drawer or tossing them into the trash? Maybe it was because the letters themselves,?with their famous titles at the top, made me feel like I was a real writer. (Someone in those hallowed editorial offices had read my writing, or at least a few sentences of it!)?Or maybe I was just hardening myself to the realities of the writing life, getting ready for a career necessarily filled more with disappointment than glory.

I don?t know.

I never received the rejection slip reproduced above. (It was sent by a film company to a prospective screenwriter in 1920, and I found it online.) But here?s one thing I do know: If I had, I wouldn?t have been crushed. The letter would immediately have gotten pride of place on my Wall of Fame.

And then, unbowed, I would have sat down at my clattery Olympia typewriter and tried again.

Celtics Beat Nets 93-76: Rajon Rondo Outplays Deron Williams As Boston Tops Brooklyn

NEW YORK ? Rajon Rondo lost his cool, and any chance at history, in the second quarter when Boston last met Brooklyn.

This time, the second period featured some of the best basketball the Celtics have played this season.

Rondo scored 19 points in his first full game against the Nets this season, and the Celtics won 93-76 on Tuesday in another game with some heated moments between the division rivals.

Rondo, sidelined in the first meeting and thrown out of the second after shoving Nets forward Kris Humphries into the courtside seats, outplayed counterpart Deron Williams and helped the Celtics take control early.

"We moved the ball; we rebounded the ball," Rondo said. "They beat us pretty bad on the glass, so tonight we did an exceptional job on the glass, taking care of the defensive rebounds, and we got stops."

A month after the teams scuffled in Boston, there was another skirmish in the fourth quarter that resulted in four technical fouls. But that was the most fight the Nets put up in a disappointing performance on the national stage of the Christmas opener. They were never in the game after the first 20 minutes, and their fans headed to the exits with under 2 minutes left as a "Let's go Celtics!" chant broke out.

"It was a big game for us. It was a division rival. We were ready for a big game. It just didn't happen," Williams said.

Rookie Jared Sullinger tied a career high with 16 points and Jeff Green had 15 for the Celtics (14-13), who avoided falling under .500 with just their second victory in six games.

The Celtics took control with a 23-5 run in the second quarter of the opener of their four-game road trip. They had 11 assists on 13 baskets and outscored the Nets 34-18 in the period after dropping the previous two meetings.

"It was good to get off to this start. It was good to finally play from start to finish, especially with the way we've been playing against Brooklyn," said Paul Pierce, who had just eight points on 3-of-10 shooting. "So it was a well-balanced game, but I'm happy with the start of the trip."

Gerald Wallace and Brook Lopez each scored 15 for the Nets, who have lost four of five. Struggling to find anything that worked, they played Lopez and fellow center Andray Blatche together with three guards at one point, but Brooklyn shot just 41 percent and committed 20 turnovers that led to 25 points.

Williams had only 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting and Joe Johnson, his partner in a high-priced backcourt, shot 4 of 14 for his 12 points.

"This one hurts. We didn't play our game. They beat us from the opening tip," Wallace said. "We didn't make shots. We turned the ball over too easy. Our defense just wasn't there tonight. We were not ourselves tonight."

Boston's Kevin Garnett had eight points and 10 rebounds on the day he tied Charles Oakley for 15th place on the NBA's career list with his 1,282nd game. He was also front and center when things got testy.

Wallace was fouled with 9:31 remaining and appeared to hold onto Garnett's uniform to balance himself and not fall. Garnett was fine with that but then objected to how long Wallace hung on to his shorts, and they said something to each other as they tried to push themselves free. That led to technical fouls on the two, along with Blatche and Courtney Lee.

Garnett said he asked Wallace what he was doing but got no response.

"I don't know where in America you can (yank) somebody's pants off, or shorts off. I don't know what the hell was going on," Garnett said.

Sullinger delivered a flagrant foul on Wallace a few minutes later, but there was nothing further.

In the Nets' Nov. 28 victory in Boston, Rondo, Humphries and Wallace were ejected.

It was the second quarter of that game where things got away from the Celtics, and Rondo's frustrations soon followed when he shoved Humphries after the Nets forward fouled Garnett. That ruined the point guard's chance to extend what was then a 37-game streak with double-digit assists, tied for second-longest ever, by finishing with three. He had five assists and six rebounds Tuesday.

This time, the second period belonged to the guys in green.

With the Celtics down three, Green had six points in a 10-0 run that made it 36-29. After Johnson's basket, Boston answered with a 13-3 spurt. Jason Terry made a 3-pointer before Rondo converted a three-point play to push the Celtics' lead to 49-34 with 3:56 to go.

The Celtics opened a 21-point lead early in the third quarter and cruised from there. Terry finished with 11 points.

Notes: As with everyone playing on Christmas, players, coaches and referees wore green ribbons in tribute to the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School. ... Humphries was out with an abdominal strain and will be re-evaluated after the Nets return from Milwaukee. He had mostly been a starter but then didn't play at all Sunday against Philadelphia. ... Feeling Avery Bradley isn't ready yet, Celtics coach Doc Rivers decided not to bring the guard on the road trip so he can continue working his way back from shoulder surgery in Boston. Rivers said the shoulder is strong but that Bradley has had only 2 1/2 practices.

Johnnie Moore: When Children Are Killed at Christmastime

One of my intentions for Philosophical Fragments ? and for the Evangelical Channel at Patheos in general ? is to bring together some of the finest examples of evangelical thought leaders engaging the issues in the public square. ?So I?ve been honored to host excellent guest posts recently from Peter Wehner of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, Jennifer Marshall of the Heritage Foundation, Josh Good of the American Enterprise Institute, Greg Scott of the Alliance Defending Freedom,?Andrew Marin of the Marin Foundation, and famed apologist Ravi Zacharias. ?I just launched a Facebook page for Philosophical Fragments ? so please click ?Like? in the box in the sidebar of this blog if you want to continue receiving some of the best evangelical commentary available.

The following is from Johnnie Moore, one of the most winsome and important voices in the rising generation of evangelical public intellectuals. ?My thanks to Johnnie for allowing me to convey that voice into the open marketplace of ideas.

*

By Johnnie Moore, Vice President of Liberty University

As our nation mourns the recent loss of so many precious children, consider that on the first Christmas, the very same evil that Jesus came to combat was similarly exhibited through the slaying of innocent children. King Herod, out of fear of losing his power at the hands of a rumored messiah, ordered the murder of all young, male children in Bethlehem.

Ironically, the same tragic tone we are experiencing this Christmas?the weeping of parents, and of a people, for their lost children?was a key part of the first Christmas, too.

Amid the tears of Sandy Hook, and of Bethlehem, Americans are asking transcendent questions like,??Why God???and?Where were you??, ?just as people have for centuries. Indeed, these are among history?s most persistent questions, but despite them ? dare we say, because of them? ? faith persists.

To anyone who?s ever darkened the door of doubt, whether in this season or another, it?s no surprise that people speak most profoundly of their faith when they talk of God?s help in their greatest time of need or in a moment of great confusion or personal crisis. For, it?s in these very times of questioning that we exhibit faith in the one who can give us hope at Christmastime and everyday. We console one another with Bible verses. We hold memorial services and candle light vigils. And, above all, we pray. ?

All of this is because man intuitively, even supernaturally, pursues God ? the same God he questions ? when life gets out of control. This is the God Christians celebrate each December. This is the same God who pursued us by entering this world to save us.

A reporter once asked Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust and Auschwitz survivor the question of ?Why?? Why had God allowed such tragedy to take place? Why had he allowed so many innocents to meet an untimely and undignified end?

Reflecting on the horror he had seen?a horror also marked by the senseless murder of children ? Wiesel replied,??I have never forsaken my faith, and it has never forsaken me. Whatever has been shaken has been shaken within faith, for faith has always been present.?

On another occasion he said,??I have not answered that question [Why?], but I have not lost faith in God. I have moments of anger and protest?Sometimes [in those moments of anger and protest] I?ve been closer to Him for that reason [alone].?

The truth, as Wiesel knew, is that we will never ? can never ? fully know ?why???

But, there are lots of things that we don?t know. We don?t know how such impossibly broken hearts can be mended; yet almost all of us know someone who has experienced such healing.?

So, why is ?knowing? so important? Why is it that man seems to have faith enough to believe that God is the one to ask, but not enough faith to trust that He can somehow make some sense of it all?

Well, consider this: If we fully understood God, then what kind of God would He be?

We must let what we know about God compensate for what we don?t understand about Him. While we think we need answers, what we actually need is God Himself.

?A God who??so loved the world that he sent his only son so that whoever believes in Him would not perish, but have eternal life? (John 3:16, paraphrased).

Johnnie Moore?is the author of a forthcoming book on the ?kindness of God? called?Dirty God?(Thomas Nelson,?January 1, 2013). He is a Professor of Religion and Vice President at the nearly 100,000-student, Liberty University. Keep track of him @johnnieM. The opinions expressed are solely those of Johnnie Moore.

Italy's Monti says would consider standing at election

ROME (Reuters) - Italian caretaker Prime Minister Mario Monti said on Sunday he would be ready to run for a second term in next year's election if he was asked to do so by political forces that adopted his reform agenda.

The former European commissioner, appointed to lead an unelected government to save Italy from financial crisis a year ago, resigned on Friday but has faced growing calls to seek a second term at the election on February 24-25.

Speaking at a year-end news conference, Monti stressed he was not now entering any political movement and that he was more concerned about his policy prescriptions being followed than personalities standing in the election.

Nonetheless, he said that if a political force or coalition offered a credible program that he supported, "I would be ready to offer my encouragement, advice and if necessary leadership."

Asked if that meant he was ready to stand as prime minister again he said: "If a credible political force asked me to run as prime minister for them I would consider it."

Both Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right People of Freedom (PDL) party and Pier Luigi Bersani's centre-left Democratic Party (PD) have urged him not to stand in the election. The PD holds a substantial lead in opinion polls.

However, Monti rejected suggestions that he was motivated by personal ambition to win political power.

"If I accept, it's to try to change the moral culture of the country. It's obvious it's not for my personal convenience," he said.

Monti has been strongly urged to stand by centrist groups ranging from disaffected former Berlusconi allies to the small UDC party, which is close to the Catholic church.

Monti said he hoped the next government would have an ample parliamentary majority and believed the traditional left-right divide was no longer adequate to tackle the problems facing Italy.

If he does enter the race, he will face strong opposition from Berlusconi, whom he criticized sharply during the course of his remarks, saying he had been "bewildered" by the 76 year-old billionaire media tycoon's frequent changes of position.

Outlining a broad policy platform to complete the reform agenda his technocrat administration began when it took office more than a year ago, Monti said the next government must not make easy election promises or backtrack on reforms.

"We have to avoid illusory and extremely dangerous steps backwards," Monti said.

While numerous European leaders and Italy's business elite have called for his economic agenda to continue, ordinary Italians, weary of tax hikes and spending cuts imposed to cut a huge public debt, are less enthusiastic.

A centrist group headed by him would probably come a distant third or even fourth in the election and one survey published last week showed 61 percent of Italians felt he should not stand.

During his 13 months in office the former economics professor repaired Italy's international standing after it plunged under the discredited Berlusconi, and pushed through reforms of the pension system, labor market and parts of the service sector.

However, many analysts said his reform efforts were too timid to significantly improve the outlook of a chronically sluggish economy, and Monti himself said that Italy was "only at the beginning of the structural reforms" required.

Italy, the euro zone's third-largest economy, has been in recession since the middle of last year, consumer spending is falling at its fastest rate since World War Two and unemployment has risen to a record high above 11 percent.

Telepresence robots let employees 'beam' into work

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) ? Engineer Dallas Goecker attends meetings, jokes with colleagues and roams the office building just like other employees at his company in Silicon Valley.

But Goecker isn't in California. He's more than 2,300 miles away, working at home in Seymour, Indiana.

It's all made possible by the Beam ? a mobile video-conferencing machine that he can drive around his company's offices and workshops in Palo Alto. The five-foot-tall device, topped with a large video screen, gives him a physical presence that makes him and his colleagues feel like he's actually there.

"This gives you that casual interaction that you're used to at work," Goecker said, speaking on a Beam. "I'm sitting in my desk area with everybody else. I'm part of their conversations and their socializing."

Suitable Technologies, which makes the Beam, is now one of more than a dozen companies that sell so-called telepresence robots. These remote-controlled machines are equipped with video cameras, speakers, microphones and wheels that allow users to see, hear, talk and "walk" in faraway locations.

More and more employees are working remotely, thanks to computers, smartphones, email, instant messaging and video-conferencing. But those technologies are no substitute for actually being in the office, where casual face-to-face conversations allow for easy collaboration and camaraderie.

Telepresence-robot makers are trying to bridge that gap with wheeled machines ? controlled over wireless Internet connections ? that give remote workers a physical presence in the workplace.

These robotic stand-ins are still a long way from going mainstream, with only a small number of organizations starting to use them. The machines can be expensive, difficult to navigate or even get stuck if they venture into areas with poor Internet connectivity. Stairs can be lethal, and non-techies might find them too strange to use regularly.

"There are still a lot of questions, but I think the potential is really great," said Pamela Hinds, co-director of Stanford University's Center on Work, Technology, & Organization. "I don't think face-to-face is going away, but the question is, how much face-to-face can be replaced by this technology?"

Technology watchers say these machines ? sometimes called remote presence devices ? could be used for many purposes. They could let managers inspect overseas factories, salespeople greet store customers, family members check on elderly relatives or art lovers to tour foreign museums.

Some physicians are already seeing patients in remote hospitals with the RP-VITA robot co-developed by Santa-Barbara, Calif.,-based InTouch Health and iRobot, the Bedford, Mass.,-based maker of the Roomba vacuum.

The global market for telepresence robots is projected to reach $13 billion by 2017, said Philip Solis, research director for emerging technologies at ABI Research.

The robots have attracted the attention of Russian venture capitalist Dimitry Grishin, who runs a $25 million fund that invests in early-stage robotics companies.

"It's difficult to predict how big it will be, but I definitely see a lot of opportunity," Grishin said. "Eventually it can be in each home and each office."

His Grishin Robotics fund recently invested $250,000 in a startup called Double Robotics. The Sunnyvale, Calif.,-company started selling a Segway-like device called the Double that holds an Apple iPad, which has a built-in video-conferencing system called FaceTime. The Double can be controlled remotely from an iPad or iPhone.

So far, Double Robotics has sold more than 800 units that cost $1,999 each, said co-founder Mark DeVidts.

The Beam got its start as a side project at Willow Garage, a robotics company in Menlo Park where Goecker worked as an engineer.

A few years ago, he moved back to his native Indiana to raise his family, but he found it difficult to collaborate with engineering colleagues using existing video-conferencing systems.

"I was struggling with really being part of the team," Goecker said. "They were doing all sorts of wonderful things with robotics. It was hard for me to participate."

So Goecker and his colleagues created their own telepresence robot. The result: the Beam and a new company to develop and market it.

At $16,000 each, the Beam isn't cheap. But Suitable Technologies says it was designed with features that make "pilots" and "locals" feel the remote worker is physically in the room: powerful speakers, highly sensitive microphones and robust wireless connectivity.

The company began shipping Beams last month, mostly to tech companies with widely dispersed engineering teams, officials said.

"Being there in person is really complicated ? commuting there, flying there, all the different ways people have to get there. Beam allows you to be there without all that hassle," said CEO Scott Hassan, beaming in from his office at Willow Garage in nearby Menlo Park.

Not surprisingly, Suitable Technologies has fully embraced the Beam as a workplace tool. On any given day, up to half of its 25 employees "beam" into work, with employees on Beams sitting next to their flesh-and-blood colleagues and even joining them for lunch in the cafeteria.

Software engineer Josh Faust beams in daily from Hawaii, where he moved to surf, and plans to spend the winter hitting the slopes in Lake Tahoe. He can't play ping-pong or eat the free, catered lunches in Palo Alto, but he otherwise feels like he's part of the team.

"I'm trying to figure out where exactly I want to live. This allows me to do that without any of the instability of trying to find a different job," Faust said, speaking on a Beam from Kaanapali, Hawaii. "It's pretty amazing."

PFT: Sanchez and Tebow riding pine on Sunday

Reggie Wayne, Jeff SaturdayAP

Many veteran players can make things uncomfortable when their time is up.

But Packers center Jeff Saturday was, well, mature in the way he handled his benching. He?s being replaced by third-year player Evan Dietrich-Smith, a player best known for having been stomped.

But there was no bitterness from Saturday, who led fan voting at his position for the NFC Pro Bowl team (which tells you more about fan voting than Saturday).

?Obviously, as a player, you want to play. But I support Evan and I know he?s a great player. He?ll get the job done and do what he needs to do to play well and get us a win,? Saturday said, via Jason Wilde of ESPNWisconsin.com. ?Obviously, I [was] a stop-gap here. There?s no surprise as far as that stuff goes. You?re 37 years old. I?ve been around this thing long enough to know that it?s not a long future. I think if ?Deedy? plays well, I wouldn?t think they?d go back and make another change. That?s how I look at it. . . .

?We?re at two totally different points of our career. His is on the up-ramp, mine is on the way out. This is football. It?s a business at the end of the day. I think ?Deeds? is going to do a great job and give us a good chance to win games.?

For a guy who has started every game he?s played since 2000 (202 games), made five Pro Bowls and was named to two All-Pro teams, it would have been easy for him to be bitter, or even absent.

Coach Mike McCarthy gave him an out, never announcing the switch, and Saturday admitted the change wasn?t made for medical reasons.

?I?d be lying if I told you it?s not disappointing and tough. I?m here to play football,? Saturday said. ?I told coach, I came here to help win a Super Bowl. Winning the NFC North is great, but that wasn?t why I was here. I looked for more of the postseason. It?s disappointing from that side.

?[But] you can?t be affected by your circumstances. I?m a member of the Packers. It?s not just me. If coach McCarthy thinks that gives us the best chance to win and go on and do things in the postseason, then that?s what it is. As a player, it?s always disappointing whenever someone else goes in front of you. It?s a tough thing to deal with. But I?m going to deal with it.

?Here?s the one thing: I can look at my family, I can look at all my players and say I put the best I could be out there. If that?s not good enough and somebody else is better, then they deserve to play. And I?ve always felt like that. I respect ?Deedy? enough to say if that?s his, then he needs to take it and go do a good job with it.?

Even if he?s no longer among the five best options on an offensive line that?s leaked all year, Saturday showed once again why he?s one of the most respected players in the league.

Black piranha, megapiranha have most powerful bites of fish living or extinct, finds GW researcher

Friday, December 21, 2012

The black piranha and the extinct giant piranha, or megapiranha, have the most powerful bites of carnivorous fishes, living or extinct, once body size is taken into account, finds researchers in a paper recently published in Scientific Reports. The research paper, Mega-Bites: Extreme jaw forces of living and extinct piranhas, highlights the piranhas' specialized jaw morphology, which allows them to attack and bite chunks out of much larger prey.

Guillermo Ort?, the George Washington University Louis Weintraub Professor of Biology in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, is one of the authors of the paper. His research focuses on the evolution of fishes in general, but specializes on Amazonian fishes, to unravel evolutionary relationships based on DNA sequence data. In 2010, Dr. Orti along with other researchers participated in an expedition to the Xingu and Iriri rivers in Amazonia to collect the data on the fish.

Piranhas' aggressive nature, relatively small size and accessible populations make them a suitable group of predatory vertebrates in which to study the evolution of extreme biting capabilities. Even at their small body sizes, diet studies indicate that piranhas will attack and bite chunks of bony fins and flesh from prey many times larger than themselves. In spite of their reputation, no quantitative data or empirical estimates regarding the piranhas biting abilities were available.

The paper reports the first bite-force measurements taken from wild specimens of the largest species of carnivorous piranha in the Amazon, the black piranha, and describes the underlying functional morphology of the jaws that allows this creature to bite with a force more than 30 times greater than its weight. The powerful bite is achieved primarily due to the large muscle mass of the black piranha's jaw and the efficient transmission of its large contractile forces through a highly modified jaw-closing lever.

The expedition was organized and filmed by National Geographic. A subsequent program called Megapiranha aired on the National Geographic Channel featured the expedition and focused on the creature that existed millions of years ago.

"It was very exciting to participate in this project, travel one more time to the Amazon to be able to directly measure bite forces in the wild," said Dr. Orti. "I learned a lot of biomechanics from my colleagues while collecting valuable specimens for my own research." The authors also reconstructed the bite force of the megapiranha, showing that for its relatively diminutive body size, the bite of this fossil piranha dwarfed that of other extinct mega-predators, including the whale-eating shark and the Devonian placoderm. Research at the Ort? lab at GW continues to focus on reconstructing the genealogical tree of fishes including piranhas based on genomic data.

Scientific Reports is a primary research publication from the publishers of Nature, covering all areas of the natural sciences.

New Mexico Company Pushes for Horse Slaughter | BloodHorse.com

Updated: Friday, December 21, 2012 8:34 PM
Posted: Friday, December 21, 2012 10:02 AM

A New Mexico meat company that wants to resume domestic horse slaughter for food is suing the federal government, alleging inaction on its application was driven by emotional political debates and has cost it hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Valley Meat Co. is seeking to force the U.S. Department of Agriculture to resume inspections necessary to open what would be the nation's first new horse slaughterhouse in more than five years.

The company and its owner, Rick de los Santos, also accuse the organizations of defamation during a yearlong dispute that has reignited debate over the humane treatment of horses and how best to control the nation's equine population.

Perhaps the most divisive question is whether the noble, iconic animals that played a key role in the settling of much of America are livestock or pets.

The USDA declined comment this week on the pending litigation. The agency has until January to respond to the suit filed in federal court in late October. Animal Protection of New Mexico also declined comment. Humane Society officials did not return a phone call Dec. 20.

Bruce Wagman, an attorney for Front Range Equine, called the lawsuit "completely false and frivolous," and said the group did nothing wrong.

"We aren't even sure what it says," he added.

The dispute began a year ago, de los Santos said, after Congress removed what effectively had become a ban on horse slaughter in the U.S. His cattle slaughter business had dropped off as area ranchers sold their herds because of drought, so he talked to the USDA about converting his slaughterhouse to handle horses.

He said he was encouraged to do so but told he would have to stop slaughtering cattle to get the proper permits.

He said he shuttered his business and set about converting it but claims he was stonewalled as publicity about his plans reignited national debate about how to deal with a growing number of abused and abandoned horses.

His lawsuit claims evidence will show a "marked change in cooperation" by the USDA that the agency allegedly told him was politically motivated.

Meanwhile, the defamation suit alleges the animal protection groups actively tried to destroy his business.
Many animal humane groups and public officials were outraged at the idea of resuming domestic horse slaughter, including New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, who previously vowed to fight the plan by Valley Meat Co.

"A horse's companionship is a way of life for many people across New Mexico," she said earlier this year. "We rely on them for work and bond with them through their loyalty."

Some others, however, including some horse rescues, livestock associations, and the American Quarter Horse Association, support a return to domestic horse slaughter.

They point to a 2011 report from the federal Government Accountability Office that shows horse abuse and abandonment have been increasing since Congress effectively banned horse slaughter by cutting funding for USDA inspection programs in 2006.

A bill passed last year authorized the USDA to resume horse slaughterhouse inspections, prompting the application from de los Santos.

The number of U.S. horses sent to other countries for slaughter has nearly tripled since domestic horse slaughter ceased. Most humane groups agree that some of the worst abuse occurs in the slaughter pipeline that often takes horses to inhumane facilities in Mexico.

Last year, 68,429 horses were shipped to that country and 64,652 to Canada, according to USDA statistics compiled by the Equine Welfare Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to ending horse slaughter. That compares to total exports of 37,884 of the animals in 2006.

Remembering Ramanujan: India Celebrates Its Famous Mathematical Son

India, home of the number zero, ends a yearlong math party in unique fashion

PORTRAIT OF A GENIUS: Srinivasa Ramanujan, Indian mathematician, was born December 22, 1887. Image: Konrad Jacobs, Oberwolfach Photo Collection

December 22, 2012, marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. An intuitive mathematical genius, Ramanujan's discoveries have influenced several areas of mathematics, but he is probably most famous for his contributions to number theory and infinite series, among them fascinating formulas ( pdf ) that can be used to calculate digits of pi in unusual ways.

Last December Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared 2012 to be a National Mathematics Year in India in honor of Ramanujan's quasiquicentennial. Ramanujan's story is dramatic and somewhat larger than life. It is even the subject of an opera by Indian-German composer Sandeep Bhagwati, a novel and two plays . Largely self-taught, he dropped out of college, took a job as a clerk in Madras and attracted the attention of British mathematician G. H. Hardy through written correspondence in 1913. Although Ramanujan's mother believed that as a Brahmin (the highest class in the Indian caste system, which was in place at the time) he should not travel overseas, Ramanujan, aged 27, went to England in 1914 and spent the ensuing war years working with Hardy and other mathematicians? at the University of Cambridge. He grew quite ill in England, and in 1919 he returned to India where he died in 1920. Since his death at age 32 mathematicians have analyzed his notebooks ( pdf ), which are full of formulas but light on justification. Most of the formulas have turned out to be correct, and researchers continue to learn from his work while trying to understand and prove them.

India's mathematical heritage extends far beyond Ramanujan's time. The nation is considered home of the concept of zero. Babylonians had used a space as a placeholder (similar to the role of "0" in the number 101), but this space could not stand alone or at the end of a number. (In our number system, as in theirs, this could be problematic; imagine trying to tell the difference between the numbers 1 and 10 by context alone.) In India, however, zero was treated as a number like any other. India is also the home of our decimal numeral system.

Indian government and mathematical societies pursued several projects to celebrate their year of mathematics, from enrichment programs for students and teachers to the "Mathematical Panorama Lectures" that occurred around the country. This series of 20 short lecture courses, which will continue into 2013, brings prominent mathematicians from different fields to Indian universities to deliver five or six lectures. M. S. Raghunathan, president of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society and chair of the organizing committee for the National Mathematics Year, wrote in an e-mail that he hopes the lectures will facilitate an infusion of Indian talent into fields that lack it right now.

Indeed, a primary purpose of the year of mathematics is to reinvigorate mathematical education in India. In his speech announcing the event, Prime Minister Singh said that although India has produced many distinguished mathematicians, "for a country of our size, the number of competent mathematicians that we have is badly inadequate." He mentioned concerns about the rigidity of India?s academic system, which some believe might squelch rather than nurture mathematical curiosity and achievement. "A genius like Ramanujan would shine bright even in the most adverse of circumstances, but we should be geared to encourage and nurture good talent which may not be of the same caliber as that of Ramanujan," he said. Singh also mentioned the need to prevent attrition of mathematically interested people. "There is a general perception in our society that the pursuit of mathematics does not lead to attractive career opportunities," he said. "This perception must change." Lectures for undergraduates, camps for motivated youngsters and educational programs designed to acquaint teachers with new topics and pedagogical ideas have all been part of the attempt to nurture mathematical interest at all levels.

Two longer-term projects begun this year could help as well: a documentary on the history of Indian mathematics and a mathematics museum in Chennai. Raghunathan hopes that the documentary will be available in 2014 and the museum will open its doors in 2015.

This yearlong fete is culminating in "The Legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan," a conference at the University of Delhi from December 17 to 22. Included are technical lectures on mathematics influenced by Ramanujan's work, public presentations on Ramanujan's notebooks, dance performances and a film about Ramanujan's life. The annual SASTRA Ramanujan Prize, which recognizes a mathematician age 32 or younger who works in a field influenced by Ramanujan, will be awarded as well. The awardee this year is Zhiwei Yun of Stanford University, whose work lies at the intersection of geometric representation theory, algebraic geometry and number theory.

DIY Coconut Oil Deodorant

?

I?m thrilled to have Stephanie of The Wannabe Homesteader guest posting today! I started making and using my own version of coconut oil deodorant this fall, and it really does work! It would even make a good Christmas present for your more ?crunchy? friends? And speaking of Christmas presents, check out the Homestead?Gift Guide for some last minute ideas for your homesteading friends?and family!?

I?ve always known that store-bought deodorants have some pretty nasty ingredients in them (they?ve even been linked to cancer) but I hesitated on making my own because I feared homemade deodorants wouldn?t really do the job.

I don?t mind sweating a little as that?s your body?s way of eliminating toxins, but I didn?t exactly want to walk around smelling ?crunchy? if you know what I mean.

After trying two natural brands of deodorant (Tom?s and the Natural Crystal), and being sorely disappointed (ie. smelling crunchy by the end of the day), I decided to give this recipe a try.

Boy, I?m so glad I did!

This natural deodorant recipe works amazingly well. My only wish is that I tried it sooner!

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder
  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch (this will add an antiperspirant effect to the deodorant.)
  • essential oils (optional, but you could use tea tree oil, sweet orange, cinnamon, etc.)

How to make:

  • Mix baking soda, cornstarch, and arrowroot powder in a bowl.
  • Add coconut oil and use a fork or pastry cutter to blend into the dry ingredients.
  • Add 5-10 drops of your chosen essential oil (I used tea tree oil).
  • Add more coconut oil or baking soda to achieve your desired consistency.
  • Viola! Now you have easy-peasy, good-for-you, all-natural deodorant!

Other Notes:

This recipe uses coconut oil which will liquefy at 76 degrees (it will remain solid at any temp under 76 degrees). I live in Florida and this deodorant stays a paste-like consistency in my bathroom. However, my husband uses the bathroom upstairs and at times, it turns into a thick liquid-y consistency. He doesn?t find it a problem, though. He just dabs his finger into it, messages it into his underarms, and then rinses his hands afterward.

I?ve heard of people putting their homemade deodorants in cleaned-out store-bought deodorant containers but it didn?t work for me. My DIY deodorant leaked out the bottom of the container and was a gooey mess.

Instead, I store this coconut oil deodorant in a small glass jar and I keep it in my medicine cabinet.

To apply, I take a small amount and rub it together with my hands to soften and then rub it into my underarms like a lotion.

Me and my husband both use this deodorant and absolutely love it. We?d never switch back to store-bought. You really must give it a try.

This recipe was adapted from Homemade Natural Deodorant: Recipes that Work on Squidoo

Stephanie is a self-described ?average joe? who desires a more real, self-reliant lifestyle in an artificial and dependent world. She blogs at The Wannabe Homesteader where she and her family have fun stumbling over each other on their way towards self-sufficiency. She spends her days homemaking and homeschooling while dreaming about homesteading.

Very Rugged, Rustic Wedding Ring. Darkened Palladium, 14K Rose Gold. 6mm wide by EmilyWiserJewelry

Very rugged, rustic wedding ring in darkened (oxidized) palladium & 14k rose gold. It's a distressed, unfinished look. I've rough-filed this wedding ring and rough-sanded it in all directions to scratch it. It's barely hammered. This ring is about 6mm wide. The width is uneven and can vary from about 5.5 to about 6.5 mm. I engrave the inside of your ring band by hand, using the same gravers goldsmiths used in the 19th century.

This is a very rugged ring. I darken the palladium and rose gold and do very little finishing. It's very sanded and has some gouges.

Please email me with your ring size. There is a 25% surcharge for ring sizes 12.25-14.

This is a custom-made, made-to-order ring and takes about 3-4 weeks to make.

Thieves Steal Two Semi-Truck Trailers Worth of Wii Consoles ...

Seen anyone wandering around with 7,000 Wii consoles?

If you have, pick up the phone and give the SeaTac, Washington police a call because those units are probably stolen.

Sgt. Cindy West told ABC News that thieves pulled up two 53-foot semi-truck trailers and a large box-truck van to a Nintendo distribution warehouse in Seattle Air Cargo?last Saturday evening?and, using forklifts on site, loaded up the vehicles with approximately $2 million worth of Wii consoles.

Then they left.

The following afternoon, warehouse employees noticed the empty pallets where thousands of Wii consoles were supposed to be.

Police don't know how many people were involved with the heist.

"If we don't get any tips ahead of time, it will be the selling of these consoles that will lead to their capture," said West. "It's gonna be pretty hard to hide 7,000 Wii game consoles."

AE: Wii consoles average about $150 right now so 7,000 of 'em would be a little over $1 million.? Methinks 'twas actually Wii U consoles 'twere stolen.

Drunk Twitter and Facebook users to avoid trial over offensive posts

New CPS guidelines will seek to cut the number of people who face prosecution over offensive social networking posts.

The new mandate, set out by the UK's Director of Public Prosecutions Kier Starmer said only those whose Twitter and Facebook posts that go beyond offensive will be brought to trial.

The CPS still wants people who make threats of violence, send out and retweet malicious messages, or breach court orders to face prosecution.

However, under the new interim guidelines, drunk social networkers who post offensive comments, but apologise and delete the comments after sobering up are likely to avoid action.

Protecting free speech and the law

The new guidelines, Mr Starmer said, aim to strike the right balance between free speech and ensuring posts stay within the law.

He said: "These interim guidelines are intended to strike the right balance between freedom of expression and the need to uphold the criminal law.

"The interim guidelines thus protect the individual from threats or targeted harassment while protecting the expression of unpopular or unfashionable opinion about serious or trivial matters, or banter or humour, even if distasteful to some and painful to those subjected to it."

The new guidelines follow a number of recent high profile cases, including the arrest of a Twitter troll who mocked Olympic diver Tom Daley over the death of his father.

There was also the row over the picture of a burning poppy posted on Facebook.

No water, power, cash: Syria rebels run broke town

MAARET MISREEN, Syria (AP) ? The anti-regime locals who have thrown together a ramshackle administration to run this northern Syrian town have one main struggle: Finding money to keep their community alive. Like other nearby rebel-held towns, Maaret Misreen is broke.

Many of the town's 45,000 residents are out of work. There's no cash to keep water or electricity running, so they come on only sporadically. Prices have skyrocketed. Long lines form at the only working bakery for miles around, creating vulnerable potential targets for airstrikes.

This week, the town's main mosque preacher, Abdel Rahim Attoun ? who now doubles as the town judge ? appealed to worshippers to chip in to buy fuel for communal water pumps. He asked each family to donate 200 Syrian pounds, a little under $3, the cost of a large bunch of bananas.

But even that's too much for many residents, so no one is being forced to donate, said 29-year-old Amer Ahmado, who is an electronics engineer but was picked by the newly formed local council for the job of managing the town's meager finances.

The situation is repeated across the swath of rebel-controlled territory in northwestern Syria, said Zafer Amoura, a lawyer who represents Maaret Misreen in an emerging provincial council. Communities are now cut off from the national government that helped keep them running, and locals forming impromptu administrations try to meet the needs of daily life amid the civil war.

At the same time, the rebels in charge of Maaret Misreen are preoccupied with the 21-month-old battle against Syrian President Bashar Assad. Some of Assad's troops are positioned just a few miles away, in the provincial capital of Idlib, while regime warplanes and combat helicopters continue to strike Maaret Misreen and its surroundings.

On a recent afternoon, a helicopter flew above the town's only working bakery, where a long line had formed, sending some people running for cover. Regime aircraft have targeted breadlines before. A bomb crater outside the Maaret Misreen bakery's bread distribution window witness bore witness to what residents say was a deadly attack several weeks ago.

Still, many were so eager to keep their place in line that they didn't budge when they heard the whirring of the helicopter's rotors.

"People are afraid, but they got used to it," said Yasser Bajar, a 35-year-old laborer and father of three who last had a paid day of work four months ago. He had been in line since the morning and had just collected his bread when the helicopter appeared overhead, then veered away.

Outside the bakery, rebel fighters acting as policemen enforced an orderly line ? women to the left, men to the right ? as customers advanced to buy the maximum per person allotment of 24 pieces of flatbread.

Even as they complain about hardship, residents say they don't want to go back to the old days, before the outbreak of the revolt against Assad in March 2011. Their stomachs were full then, but the regime controlled their lives, they said.

"We just need to get rid of him (Assad) and then get some rest," said Omar al-Helo, 23, who stopped working as a carpenter months ago for lack of demand and now ekes out a living selling fruit in a small outdoor market.

Maaret Misreen, a 30-minute drive from the Turkish border, is surrounded by vast stretches of olive groves and is the main town providing services for about three dozen hamlets in the area.

The Syrian military didn't have a presence in town and rebels took control in October 2011, as local regime representatives gradually slipped away, residents said.

Fighters use the town as a rear base for their battle for Idlib, some 10 kilometers (seven miles) to the south. The bearded men, rifles slung over shoulders and ammunition belts crossing their chests, are everywhere in town, driving around in pickup trucks or hanging out in one of the coffee shops.

Meanwhile, residents hustle for necessities. Over the past year, the local economy contracted sharply as dangerous roads restricted the movement of goods, shops closed and more men joined the fighting.

Water flows only for an hour or two a day because the town can't afford diesel fuel to pump it. Electricity comes on once or twice a week, briefly. Prices are up sharply ? triple for diapers, almost double for a can of tuna, which now goes for the equivalent of about $1.30. The regime stopped contributing to the town's operating costs after the rebel takeover, and residents stopped paying municipal taxes or utility bills.

There are attempts to keep some semblance of an economy going. Women and children have harvested olives in recent weeks despite the risks. In one grove, a rebel tank was parked under the trees, tucked away until the next battle.

In an odd twist, the regime continued for months to pay salaries of civil servants in rebel-held areas, including in Maaret Misreen, where local officials estimate at least one-third of working adults hold government jobs.

One of Maaret Misreen's 22 garbage collectors said that while some of his colleagues have quit, he and others are still getting paid.

However, the regime is starting to clamp down, said Amer Bitar, a 50-year-old former judge.

Civil servants are now required to pick up their salaries in person in Idlib, and many from Maarat Misreen won't make the trip, fearing arrest as rebel sympathizers at regime checkpoints, Bitar said. Bitar himself quit his job as a criminal court judge in Idlib several months ago for fear of arrest.

Another resident said he still commutes daily to work in a state-run company in Idlib, passing through government checkpoints.

"If someone is not wanted, they leave him alone and don't say anything," he said of the regime.

He said about a third of the company's employees have left because of the turmoil. The 50-year-old spoke on condition he and his work place not be identified for fear of retribution.

Two months ago, Bitar and others set up the local council to run the town. Strong social ties help hold things together. Bitar is a cousin of one of the town's main rebel commanders. Attoun, the mosque preacher, has been recruited as a judge, ruling on anything from traffic accidents to marital spats.

Local rebels double as policemen when not on the front lines.

One recent day, rebels caught a suspected motorcycle thief and took him to one of their bases, a two-story home in an olive grove on the outskirts of town. They handcuffed and blindfolded the frightened 16-year-old. He refused to give up his accomplices, and was told he'd be handed to a much tougher battalion for further questioning.

Ahmado, the town's young financial manager, said resident's donations have brought in the equivalent of between $490 to $700 a week, a tiny fraction of what is needed to buy enough diesel for water pumps and generators.

Bitar said foreign aid is the only way out for rebel-run communities if the regime hangs on.

In the past, foreign donors were reluctant to channel large sums to Syria's fractured opposition for fear the money could fall into the wrong hands.

The international community pledged tens of millions of dollars in aid after recognizing last week a reorganized opposition coalition as the sole representative of the Syrian people. But money is unlikely to start flowing soon.

Bitar said that despite the difficulties, Maaret Misreen needs to learn now how to run itself so it has a head start in a post-Assad era. "After the regime falls, we will be ready," he said.
