Shared Responsibilities Can Improve Marriage | Psych Central News

Shared Responsibilities Can Improve Marriage New research suggests a shared approach to household chores and parenting is a tonic for a successful marriage.

However, University of Missouri researchers discovered an equal distribution of responsibilities is not always necessary as each couple will determine expectations of each partner.

?Sharing can mean something different to every couple,? said Adam Galovan, lead researcher and doctoral student in human development and family studies.

?It could be taking turns changing diapers or one parent watching the children while the other prepares dinner. Doing things together and having mutual, agreed-upon divisions of labor benefitted both spouses.?

Galovan and his Brigham Young University and Utah State University colleagues surveyed 160 heterosexual couples to see how the parents divided household responsibilities and how those chores affected the husbands? and wives? relationships.

The couples were married for an average of five years and had at least one child age five or younger. Most of the parents were between 25 and 30 years old, and about 40 percent of the women had full- or part-time jobs.

?The more wives perceived that husbands were engaged in routine family work tasks, the better the relationships were for both partners,? Galovan said. ?Wives in our study viewed father involvement and participation in household chores as related. Doing household chores and being engaged with the children seem to be important ways for husbands to connect with their wives, and that connection is related to better couple relationships.?

The bonds between fathers and their children also contributed to couples? marital satisfaction, Galovan said.

?When wives felt their husbands were close to their children, both spouses reported better marriages,? said Galovan. ?The father-child bond was particularly important for wives.?

Parenthood is not easy and caring for a child is a challenge. Couples should realize that transitioning into parenthood requires an adjustment period, and it is normal for husbands and wives to feel stressed, Galovan said.

To counteract the stress, he recommends that parents make each other a priority.

?Find ways to connect throughout the day, even if it?s just doing dishes together or watching a movie,? Galovan said. ?These simple connections in daily life seem to enhance couples? marital satisfaction and improve the quality of their relationships.?

The study is?found in the Journal of Family Issues.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Gas prices are slightly lower in Ohio as the new work week gets under way.

A gallon of regular gas in Ohio was listed at an average of $3.53 in Monday's survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. That's 3 cents less than last Monday's average of $3.56 ? and it marks a decrease of 17 cents in the past two weeks.

The national average for regular gas is about $3.59 per gallon, down about 4 cents from a week ago and an 11-cent drop from two weeks ago.

The Ohio average is 8 cents lower than at the same time last month, and 26 cents lower than the same time in 2012.

Job posting suggests Apple trying to bulk up fingerprint scanning tech for future iPhones

By Mark Lamport-Stokes AUGUSTA, Georgia, April 8 (Reuters) - Steve Stricker could certainly do with a bit of Masters payback after giving his good friend Tiger Woods a valuable putting lesson during last month's WGC-Cadillac Championship in Miami. Helped by Stricker's advice, Woods went on to triumph by two shots over his fellow American at Doral, then won the Arnold Palmer Invitational on his next start to cement his status as a hot favourite for this week's Masters at Augusta National. ...

Acclaimed documentary maker Les Blank dies at 77

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) ? Les Blank, an acclaimed documentary maker who focused his camera on cultural corners ranging from blues music, to garlic lovers, to shoe-eating artists, died Sunday at age 77, his son said.

Blank died at his home in Berkeley, Calif. nearly a year after being diagnosed with bladder cancer, Harrod Blank said.

Blank's 42 films earned him a lifetime achievement award from the American Film Institute.

"I think he's a national treasure," filmmaker Taylor Hackford, president of the Directors Guild of America, told the New York Times. "Although his films are not well known at the moment, they'll take their place"

The Florida-born Blank's early documentaries focused on musicians, including 1965's "Dizzy Gillespie" and "The Blues Accordin' to Lightnin' Hopkins," a portrait of the Texas bluesman that won Blank his first wide renown.

He shifted to food with documentaries like 1980's "Garlic is as Good as 10 Mothers," and 2007's "All in This Tea."

Blank was known for following his curiosity anywhere. No topic was too strange ? or too ordinary. His 1987 film "Gap-Toothed Women" was a series of interviews on the subject spurred by an old high school crush.

"If he was interested in gap-toothed women, he's going to make a film about it. If he wants to make a film about garlic because he loves to eat garlic, he's going to do it," said Harrod Blank, who is also a filmmaker.

But the subject that led to Blank's most memorable work was fellow filmmaker Werner Herzog.

In 1979's "Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe," Blank chronicled Herzog's attempt to dine on his boot, the result of a lost bet.

And "Burden of Dreams," Blank's 1982 behind-the-scenes view of Herzog's disastrous filming of "Fitzcarraldo" in the Peruvian jungle, became a classic chronicle of artistic obsession.

"If I abandon this project, I would be a man without dreams," Blank films Herzog saying in the film. "I don't want to live like that,"

'Overnight Diet' Promises Weight Loss While You Sleep

Apr 8, 2013 10:07am

Amy Frankel wanted to lose weight, so she tried the Overnight Diet, a new rapid weight-loss plan that claims you can actually lose weight while you sleep.

Frankel, a 42-year-old mother of one from Wayland, Mass., said she literally lost weight overnight, and during the course of the diet went from 174 pounds to 125 pounds.

?You are ? burning calories and losing weight and you are not starving yourself and you?re not ever feeling deprived.? It wasn?t difficult,? said Frankel, who said she went from wearing size 10 and 12 to a size 4 in about a year of doing the diet, which she?s now adopted as a way of life.

Dr. Caroline Apovian, an obesity doctor and the author of the new book, ?The Overnight Diet,? explained the regimen. Users do six days of a high protein diet and one day of a liquid diet. That, combined with sleep, equals weight loss, she claims.

?You can lose up to two pounds overnight. And then for the six days, you can lose up to nine pounds in one week after the first week,? said Apovian, an associate professor of medicine and pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine and the director of nutrition and weight management at Boston Medical Center.

?That first night, you go to sleep, you sleep your eight hours, you are down two pounds,? she said. ?If you continue to get enough sleep every night, you won?t get those hunger pangs. The hunger pangs come from lack of sleep, which induces the hunger hormone to get secreted from your gut.?

Apovian, who is also the director of clinical research at the Obesity Research Center of Boston Medical Center, said exercise is not required for users of this plan.

While typically, 25 percent of people who go on any diet actually lose weight and keep it off, Apovian said that in her clinic, that number rises to 50 percent.

Keith Ayoob of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York said it was possible to lose two pounds overnight, but added: ?It won?t be fat. It?ll be mostly water. Because there?s no how, no way you?re going to lose two pounds of body fat overnight.?

?In order to lose two pounds of body fat overnight you?d have to burn up about six or seven thousand calories and there?s just no way to do that by sleeping,? said Ayoob, director of the nutrition clinic at the college?s Rose F. Kennedy Center

?You know, you?ve got to actually expend that or cut back on your intake. And it takes longer than overnight to do that,? he said.

Some are skeptical of the diet?s claims of so much weight loss so quickly.

Apovian acknowledges that the first two pounds lost on her diet are mostly water weight and salt weight, but says it provides the incentive for a high protein diet and more weight loss.

Eyes-on with Sony's brilliant 4K OLED monitor prototypes (video)

DNP Eyeson with Sony's 4K OLED monitor prototypes video

The 30- and 56-inch 4K OLED monitor prototypes that Sony introduced yesterday are sitting prominently in the company's booth here at NAB, and they're really quite something. These sets offer wider viewing angles and reduced color shift compared to previous-gen monitors, and Sony is emphasizing the technology's color accuracy. We got a taste of the 56-inch, 3,840 x 2,160 model back at CES, but it looks like we can extinguish all hopes of this monitor making it to the consumer market anytime soon. Instead, it will be available to professionals working with 4K content. Even though the prototype won't make it to our living room, we couldn't help but marvel at the image quality: to say that the footage of Carnivale popped off the screen would be an understatement -- colors were just that vibrant and details were incredibly lifelike.

Meanwhile, the 30-inch, 4,096 x 2,160 model is destined to hit the market sometime in 2014, and it's plenty striking itself. Like its larger sibling, the relatively petite model looked fantastic, with very sharp details and bright, vibrant colors. Sony wouldn't share pricing information -- heck, booth attendants wouldn't even let us get close enough to get a good shot of the monitor itself -- but we did manage to snag a clip of both panels in action. Granted, it's impossible to judge the quality from our compressed eyes-on video, but if you can't make it out to NAB, you'll just have to take us on our word that these really are quite stunning.
